Abstract

In this paper, we have successfully synthesized the new single crystals of GdFe1-xMnxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3), and investigated their spin reorientation and magnetocaloric effects. Compared with parent oxide GdFeO3, an additional spin reorientation transition from Γ4 to Γ1 is found in Mn-doped oxides with x = 0.2 and 0.3. The spin reorientation transition temperature, which is insensitive to the magnetic field even up to 10 kOe, can be tailored by changing Fe content. These findings are valuable for the design of magnetic switching devices. Moreover, the large values of magnetic entropy change at low temperatures suggest that GdFe0.7Mn0.3O3 single crystal is a promising candidate as the very low-temperature magnetic refrigerant.
