Abstract

Mössbauer studies of dysprosium metal and cubic Laves intermetallic compounds (DyAl 2, DyNi 2 and DyCo 2) were carried out at various temperatures in the range between 4.2° and 147°K. The measurements show that relaxation processes modify the Mössbauer spectra, especially at temperatures close to the Curie points. The rate equation method of relaxation theory was employed to interpret the observed experimental spectra. Assuming that the crystalline fields do not significantly modify the level structure of Dy 3+ ions obtained due to exchange interactions, and considering only direct relaxation processes ( ΔJ z = ± 1) fair agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.
