Abstract

We investigate spin precession in the presence of randomlydistributed magnetic moments which reorient by thermally activatedtransitions. Based on analytical calculations and scalingarguments, we find that the polarisation decay of a spin ensembleexhibits a rich behaviour characterised by stretched exponentialsand power laws. The anomalous relaxation laws result fromheavy-tailed local field distributions and are verified bycomputer simulations. The general problem is discussed in thecontext of μSR in random assemblies of superparamagneticclusters.
