Abstract

Spin polarization and spin alignment of angular momenta in hypernuclei are discussed in terms of a distorted wave Born approximation. Hypernuclei produced by (${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$,${\mathrm{K}}^{+}$) and (${\mathrm{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) reactions are shown to have sizable amounts of polarization and alignment. They are promising for use in spectroscopic studies of electromagnetic transitions, electromagnetic moments, and weak decays of hypernuclear states.
