Abstract

An analytical expression for the spin-orbit polarization potential due to second-order effects of dipole Coulomb excitation is obtained. This potential is local, complex and depends on the scattering energy and on the excitation energy of the dipole states. The effect of this potential is investigated for the analyzing powers and partial reaction cross sections in the elastic scattering of 11Be on 197Au. Optical model calculations using the polarization potential are compared with coupled channels calculations including excitation of the 1 2 − state of 11Be.
