Abstract

This paper examines the common stock returns of both parent and spin-off firms once the two start trading separately. The major finding of the study is that spin-offs incur abnormal losses once they start to trade. This result is similar to the return behavior of firms after listing on the New York Stock Exchange or American Stock Exchange and suggests that the postlisting phenomena may be more general than previously documented.
