Abstract

The spin-Hamiltonian parameters (g factors g(parallel to), g(perpendicular to) and hyperfine structure constants A(parallel to) and A(perpendicular to)) for Co(4+) ion in Al(2)O(3):Mg(2+) crystals are calculated from the resonance theory related to the low-spin (2)T(2) term in trigonal symmetry. The calculated values are in reasonable agreement with the observed values. From the calculation, the defect structure of Co(4+) Center in Al(2)O(3): Mg2+ crystal is obtained. The result is consistent with the expectations based on the electrostatic interaction and electron cloud overlap. The signs of hyperfine structure constants A(parallel to) and A(perpendicular to) are suggested. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
