Abstract

We have observed experimental energy band dispersions of the surface electronic states of Fe(001) by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have shown that the majority spin surface state exists below the Fermi level throughout the Γ− Δ− X symmetry line in the surface Brillouin zone and there is no evidence of the minority spin surface states predicted by a theoretical calculation. Comparing the experimental results with the calculations, we suggest that the enhancement of the surface magnetic moment is larger than predicted.
