Abstract

In the HERMES experiment at HERA a polarised 3He target was used as an effective neutron target during the successful commissioning year 1995. The use of novel beam and target technologies and a large acceptance spectrometer allowed a measurement of spin-dependent quantities that is complementary to other experiments. An overview of the detector and target is given, followed by the preliminary analysis for the inclusive data. The preliminary result for Γ n 1 is −0.032 ± 0.013 (stat) ± 0.017(syst) at Q 2 = 3 GeV 2.
