Abstract

Neutron diffuse scattering measurements were used to study the spin correlations in Au--15 at. % Fe. Single-crystal data were obtained in the first Brillouin zone for a [001] orientation at temperatures of 10 and 295 K. The results indicate free spins at 295 K with the development of spin correlations below about 200 K. The cross section at 10 K is similar to that observed by x rays with diffuse streaks in 〈210〉 directions and diffuse peaks both at (000) and {11/20}. Intercomparison of the x-ray and neutron data suggests the presence of atomic short-range order consisting of Fe platelets in {420} planes, but with some spatial correlation between the platelets. The magnetic short-range order can be described by ferromagnetic spin correlations in these partially correlated platelets, but with a magnetic correlation length larger than that of the atomic order.
