Abstract

The responses of laser-diode pumped single-mode LiNd P 4 O 12 lasers to a deep sinusoidal modulation of the pump intensity are investigated. Regular spiking pulse oscillations (spike mode) are found to occur whenever the pump power is dropped below the threshold during part of the cycle. Single-longitudinal mode coherent optical pulses with peak power of 23 times the average power and 0.3μs pulse-width have been obtained at the maximum repetition rate of 200 kHz in the experiment. Alternate spiking oscillations, resulting from the mode competition effect, have been obtained in a deeply pump-modulated orthogonally dual-polarized LiNdP 4 O 12 laser.
