Abstract

The skin is densely innervated with nociceptive neurons specialized in detecting noxious and painful stimuli. In a recent issue of Cell, Cohen etal. report that activation of cutaneous nociceptive neurons leads to a nerve-reflex action that is sufficient to provide a danger signal that triggers regional immunity to fight a microbial challenge.
