Abstract
The presence of sphingolipid-enriched domains (SLED), first identified in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is now established in different fungal species. These sterol-depleted fungal membrane regions are in a tightly-packed yet dynamic gel phase. To understand at the molecular level the formation and stability of those domains, we characterized different membrane model systems, composed by POPC, phytoceramide -the yeast sphingolipid backbone- and/or ergosterol. Phytoceramide, but not ergosterol, is essential to obtain rigid domains with an acyl chain packing similar to that found in yeast SLED.
