Abstract

Abstract : The postulate of spherulite deformation has now been verified by direct microscopic observation. Films of polybutene-1, about 1 mil thickness, (made from samples obtained through the courtesy of Phillips Petroleum Company) were prepared by molding in a laboratory press at 150 C for 15 min at 2,000 psi pressure and then lowering the temperature to less than 80 deg at the natural cooling rate of the press before removing. They were stretched varying amounts, either directly after preparation or after aging for more than 100 hours. No changes in spherulite appearance or birefringence was detectable upon aging even though the crystal structure is known to change during this period. However, the changes of the birefringence of the spherulites of the fresh and aged samples upon stretching are different. (Author)
