Abstract

SYNOPSIS. Protoplast‐like, osmotically‐sensitive bodies were prepared from Euglena gracilis by treatment with a crude preparation of proteolytic enzymes. These spheroplasts were free of pellicles to varying degree as viewed by phase‐contrast microscopy and were more easily ruptured than were untreated controls. The spheroplasts retained D‐lactate dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase activity, but with altered permeability characteristics.
