Abstract
Contact lens fitters have been confronted with patients complaining that their vision is better with glasses than with soft contact lenses, especially for low astigmatic patients (0.25–0.75 D). A new soft lens called SV-38, with an aspherical front curve, should enhance the quality of vision since it controls better for spherical aberration. We compared the visual performance of spectacles, SV-38 and one type of conventional spherical soft lens on 28 eyes. The results of the Friedman and the Wilcoxon tests indicate that the difference in performance reached a statistically significant level for the higher frequencies of the contrast sensitivity function and visual acuity as measured by the Snellen chart. The SV-38 increases visual performance of low astigmatic patients in most cases.
