Abstract

A new method of spherical harmonic analysis was applied to the annual mean of vector magnetic data from 82 observatories for epoch 1960.0. The resulting model of the geomagnetic field, containing 77 Gaussian coefficients, fits the observatory data with an rms error of 358 γ, the project Magnet data to 394 γ and the Vanguard satellite data to 54 γ. For comparison, corresponding figures were obtained for 10 other published field models. Results for all models were obtained with and without an epoch correction using the Nagata and Oguti time derivative Gaussian coefficients.
