Abstract

Scanning electron microscopical investigation of fracture sufaces and lubricant debris has revealed that spherical debris is a characteristic feature associated with rolling contact fatigue. It is formed by deformation processes within propagating fatigue cracks. Its detection is suggested as a diagnostic aid for the indication of distress in critical rolling mechanisms.
