Sphenoid Mucocele—An Unusual Mimic of Pituitary Neoplasm

Abstract

MUCOCELE of the sphenoid sinus is a rare condition which may simulate a variety of other disease processes. Although mucoceles of the frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses are relatively common, there have been fewer than 40 cases of sphenoid mucoceles reported to date. Almost all of these have been published in the otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and allied specialty journals. Only one case has appeared in recent years in a journal directed to the attention of internists.¹The following case is reported in order to call attention to this unusual entity which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesions in and around the sella turcica. <h3>Report of a Case</h3> This 18-year-old white boy was admitted to the USAF Hospital, Walker Air Force Base, New Mexico, on Jan 11, 1966, because of a twoweek history of persistent right parietal headache.
