Abstract. Fifteen Sphagnum species were collected from wet drainages associated with 19 abandoned coalmines in western Pennsylvania: S. affine Ren. & Card., S. bartlettianum Warnst., S. centrale C. Jens., S. cuspidatum Hoffm., S. fallax (Klinggr.) Klinggr., S. fimbriatum Wils., S. isoviitae Flat., S. lescurii Sull., S. magellanicum Brid., S. molle Sull., S. palustre L., S. papillosum Lindb., S. russowii Warnst., S. subtile (Russow) Warnst., and S. teres (Schimp.) Angstr. The most common species was S. fimbriatum. All are common in the region, except S. molle, which may represent a disjunct population.
