Abstract

ABSTRACT In the present study, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) method has been developed and used to model the penetration of a rigid body to the soil under a certain force. The soil is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid with a free surface condition. Although the SPH method involves some complexity, it is generally a simple and suitable method for modelling the contact of the rigid body to the soil; the free surface and the movement of the body can easily be implemented by the SPH method. By developing this method, the interaction of soil particles with a rigid body is investigated. The model considered for the soil is Bingham’s model. In this study, the method is developed and validated with the previously available data and then used to model the problem of the rigid body contacting with soil. The purpose of this paper is to develop the SPH method in soil modelling and investigation of the amount of rigid body penetration in the soil. So, the penetration depth of the circular cylinder and rhombic cylinder as the rigid bodies in the collision to the soil are investigated and compared.
