Abstract

Four successive extracts of Vitex negundo stem bark were evaluated for spermicidal and post-coital anti-fertility activity in Swiss male albino mice and female albino Swiss wistar rats, respectively. The petroleum ether, chloroform, and methanol extracts at 20 mg.mL−1 showed significant reduction in motility and viability of sperms in in vitro studies. These extracts were evaluated for spermicidal activity in male mice. All the extracts at a dose of 200 mg.kg−1 body weight showed androgenic effect. Anti-implantation effect of petroleum ether, chloroform, and methanol extracts at 200 mg.kg−1 body weight (b.w.) was observed in the female rats. The estrogenic effect of extracts was supported by histological changes in the uterus of immature female albino rats.
