Abstract
An investigation was carried out to determine if IUDs alter the migration os sperm in the female reproductive tract. The Margulies intrauterine spiral was inserted into 4 fertile Indian women prior to a scheduled elective operation (hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy in 3 patients unilateral salpingooophorectomy in the 4th). Coitus occurred the evening before the operation. Motile sperm were found in the cervical mucus and Fallopian tubes of all 4 women and in the uteri of the 3 women who had had hysterectomies. (The uterus of the 4th woman was not examined). Motile sperm were found around the IUD in each uterus.
