Abstract

to be a great variation in spelling and reading achieve ment among school children. Considerable study has been given to techniques suitable for teaching these skills. There appears to be a need, however, for more definite knowledge regarding a variety of factors in the relationship between spelling and read ing abilities and trends in achievement as children progress from grade to grade. It is the purpose of this investigation to study several aspects of this re lationship, particularly with regard to retardation and acceleration in achievement, through the follow ing means: 1. To measure the relationship between the spelling and general reading abilities of children in grades three through eight and to discover if there isa trend for these correlations to be higher on the primary than on the intermediate level. 2. To discover the trends in retardation and acceleration in spelling compared to the trends i n retardation and acceleration in reading on various grade levels.
