Abstract

Spectrofluorometric in situ analysis of polycyclic aromatic compounds after separation on acetylated cellulose layers. I. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation The evaluation of polycyclic aromatic compounds, separated by thin-layer chromatography on acetylated cellulose, is described. In situ measurements of the fluorescence, excitation and emission spectra on thin-layer plates by means of a spectrofluorometer allow the identification as well as the determination of most of these substances. The limit of detection depends on the intensity of fluorescence of the aromatic compounds, and was estimated to be 0.1 to 0.001 μg on average. The error in the reproducibility in spotting the sample on the thin-layer plate is in the order of 10%. Standard curves show a fairly good linearity up to 0.2 μg of the substance. The results obtained from the standard curves, corrected by an external standard, are independent of the adjustment of the instrument.
