Abstract

This paper will present a number of instructional applications in the area of speech communication and phonetics that use the Apple Macintosh microcomputer. These applications range from the fast display and analysis of speech spectra using Farallon Computing's MacRecorder, and an interactive tutorial on the decibel, to several large HyperCard stacks, such as the UCLA phonetics collection and my own evolving “translation” of Pullum and Ladusaw's Phonetic Symbol Guide. Emphasis will be placed on the potential of this medium for the relatively efficient creation of truly interesting, and therefore truly educational, computer software.
