Abstract

In one of the early columns in this series we published a list of research topics in wireless engineering that were of likely significance to the spectrum policy community. There were seven topics in that list. In this column we go into more depth on two of those topics in the hope that either graduate students looking for a thesis topic or academic researchers might decide to explore one of the topics for the benefit of the whole wireless community. The two issues deal with radio propagation in cognitive radio systems and filters, and how these in turn impact important spectrum policies, something of which most specialists are unaware. But even among spectrum policy specialists, the size of the impact of these two issues is not well understood.
