Osmer, P. S. Abstract Results are reported for observations with an SIT vidicon system of 19 quasar candidates identified in a survey performed with a transmission-grating/prism combination and a 4-m telescope. The data presented include the wavelengths of the observed emission lines, redshifts, the observed magnitude in the continuum at a wavelength corresponding to 1475 A in the rest frame, the emitted flux in the continuum for a cosmology with a zero deceleration factor and a Hubble constant of 50 km/s per Mpc, as well as measures of the intensities and equivalent widths of the (Ly-alpha + N V) and C IV emission lines. Previous redshift and magnitude estimates are shown to compare well with the observed values for 13 candidates with confirmed redshifts, and the surface-density - magnitude relation is examined for magnitudes of 17 to 21 and redshifts of 1.9 to 3.25. The results of the 4-m survey and a previous survey of faint quasars are compared. These two surveys are found to suggest a slope for the luminosity function of 0.9 dex per magnitude for quasars with redshifts of 2 to 2.5. The importance of the luminosity function at a redshift of 2 is briefly discussed.
