Abstract

In this work, we report the study of energy transfer between Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions in GeS2–Ga2S3–CsCl chalcohalide glasses at room temperature by using steady-state and time-resolved laser spectroscopy. The study includes absorption, emission, and excitation spectra, as well as lifetime measurements. The presence of Yb3+ emission after excitation in the 4F5/2 level of Nd3+ together with the 4I9/2→4F5/2 and 4I9/2→4F3/2 bands of Nd3+ in the excitation spectra of Yb3+ ions confirm that energy transfer occurs from Nd3+ to Yb3+. The transfer efficiency was investigated from the emission spectra. Back transfer from Yb3+ to Nd3+ was also observed in the emission spectra of the codoped samples after excitation of Yb3+ ions.
