Abstract

Four different stages of afterglow can be observed when the O 2 partial pressure in a mixture of N 2 and O 2 is changed. A study was made of the relationship between the partial pressures of N 2 and O 2 for each individual stage. The absorption spectra of these glows in the vacuum region showed the presence of N, O, and NO, and measurements were made of the concentration of atomic nitrogen, 2p 3 4S, 2p 3 2D, 2p 3 2P , in the nitrogen afterglow. The a 1 Π g − X 1 Σ g + bands of N 2 were observed in emission in the nitrogen afterglow. With consideration of both emission and absorption spectra, the reaction mechanisms are discussed briefly for each stage.
