Abstract

Absorption spectra of the Pr 3+ ions in saturated CdCl 2 solution are studied at room temperature in the UV–Visible region. From the observed spectra four energy levels are identified and assigned. It is very interesting that in 3H 4 → 1D 2 transition we observe clear splitting which occurs due to the effect of the surrounding ligand ions. The free ion energies are calculated using a fitting procedure. Thereby, the best values of all the parameters in the free ion Hamiltonian, i.e., the Slater-Condon electrostatic, spin-orbit, configuration interaction, Marvin parameters, and the two-body electrostatically correlated magnetic parameters are evaluated.
