Abstract

Both the electron micrographs and the UV-vis-near-IR reflectance spectra show that samples of MgO-CoO diluted solid solutions can be prepared in the form of cubelets where 98-96% of the surface ions are located on the (100) faces. CO adsorption at 77 K on the (100) faces occurs on both Mg/sup 2 +/ and Co/sup 2 +/ ions with formation of sigma-bonded Mg/sup 2 +/-CO and (sigma-..pi..)-bonded CO/sup 2 +/-CO carbonyls. CO parallel oscillators adsorbed onto Mg/sup 2 +/ ions extensively interact via dipole-dipole coupling as found on metals. CO molecules adsorbed onto isolated Co/sup 2 +/ ions are decoupled. An interaction occurs between Co/sup 2 +/-CO species and the adjacent Mg/sup 2 +/-CO ones via an inductive effect transmitted through the solid.
