Abstract

The Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes of an azo dye [UAAPJderived from 4-amino-2, 3-dimethyl-l-phenyl-3-pyrazoline-5-one and lH-pyrimidine-2, 4-dione have been prepared. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic measurement, molar conductance, FTIR, UV-Vis spectra, 1H NMR, and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies and thermo gravimetric analysis. Analytical data suggests molecular formula [Fe(UAAP)2]Cl3 for Fe(III) complex and [Fe(UAAP)2SO4] for Fe(II) complex. The IR spectral data suggest that [UAAP] is acting as a neutral tridentate ligand towards Fe(III) and as a neutral bidentate ligand towards Fe(II) in their complexes. Mossbauer and electronic spectral data and magnetic moment value agree with the high spin octahedral geometry for both complexes. The ligand and complexes were screened for antibacterial and antifungal studies. The metal complexes exhibit increased antimicrobial activity than ligand.
