Abstract

The adsorption of thiocyanate, SCN −, on colloidal silver particles and the accompanying optical effects were investigated. A new band at around 550 nm appears with the addition of SCN − ions into silver sol. This is interpreted from the viewpoint of ‘aggregation’ and ‘surface electron density at silver particles’. Furthermore, the influence of halide ions on the SERS of SCN − was probed. The influence varies with Cl −, Br − and I −, which is coincide with their effect on the surface state of silver sol and their adsorption ability at silver particles. Both Br − and I − decrease the SERS effect. But for Cl −, there is a critical concentration point, i.e. Cl − can either increase or decrease the SERS effect, which is dependent on its concentration.
