Abstract

The fundamental νOH shifts and association constants for methanol hydrogen bonded to some relatively weak proton acceptors (alkyl halides, aryl halides, aromatic hydrocarbons) are reported for standardized conditions in CCl4 solution, and the data are compared with similar measurements involving some relatively strong bases (containing N or O acceptor atoms) under the same conditions. The general usefulness of hydrogenic frequency displacements of the donor species as a measure of the basicity of the acceptor species is questioned.
