Abstract

Sm3+ -doped PVDF-ZrO2 hybrid membrane was synthesized using sol–gel method. Spectroscopic properties of the material were studied using absorption, photoluminescence and Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Energy band gap and Sm3+ -ligand bond in the material were estimated using the absorption spectrum. Oscillator strengths of the peaks in the absorption spectrum were calculated and used to estimate Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters. The photoluminescence spectrum reveals that the material emits bluish-white light at the excitation wavelength of 400 nm. The Fourier-transform infrared spectrum was used to study the vibrational modes in Sm3+ -doped PVDF-ZrO2.
