Abstract

MZnPO:Nd3+ (M=Gd, Y) phosphide oxides were synthesized by using the solid state reaction method. Crystal structures have been confirmed with the X-ray powder diffraction. The MZnPO crystals possess trigonal structure with a R3m space group. In these compounds, the phosphate ions (P3-) create ligands, like the oxygen ions. The M-O and Zn-P bonds are covalent. The absorption, FTIR and emission spectra, as well as the luminescence decay curves measurements were performed. Stark energy levels of the Nd3+ ions were obtained from the absorption and emission spectra. The spectroscopic quality parameter and the luminescence branching ratio of the neodymium(III) ions were estimated. The investigated crystals might find applications as the down-shifting materials, to enhance the yield of silicon solar cells.
