Abstract

An Er:Yb:YSr3(PO4)3 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method and its spectroscopic properties were investigated at room temperature. The crystal has an absorption cross section of 1.28 × 10−20 cm2 at 975 nm and a broad emission band with full width at half the maximum of 42 nm at 1.5–1.6 μm. The fluorescence lifetime of 4I13/2 multiplet of Er3+ was 6.79 ms and the energy transfer efficiency from Yb3+ to Er3+ was estimated to be 88.4% in the crystal. Pumped by a 975 nm diode laser, a 1565 nm quasi-continuous-wave laser with a slope efficiency of 14.9% and a maximum output peak power of 410 mW was achieved in an Er:Yb:YSr3(PO4)3 crystal.
