Abstract

Ce 3+-doped Na 2CaMg(PO 4) 2 was prepared by high temperature solid-state reaction. The phosphor was confirmed to be pure crystalline phase of Na 2CaMg(PO 4) 2. The spectroscopic properties of the Ce 3+ ions were investigated by vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. The energy transfer from the host to Ce 3+ ions was demonstrated. The phosphor could be excited by VUV light and showed a broad purplish blue emission with the maximum wavelength at 385 nm. The five 5d levels corresponding to the 4f 1 → 4f 05d 1 transition of Ce 3+ ions were identified. The spectroscopic parameters, e.g., the barycenter, host absorption bands, crystal field splitting and stokes shift were discussed.
