Abstract SIT Vidicon spectra with a resolution of 2.5 Å were obtained over an interval of approximately one month beginning near nova maximum. Particular attention was focused on the evolution of the Hα, Hβ, and Fe II (RMT 42) line profiles and their radial velocities. The laboratory wave-lengths of these lines were always located on the blue side of the emission profile. Multiple absorption systems with different radial velocities were often present for the same line on the same night. The different absorption systems can be classified roughly into low-, intermediate-, and high-velocity features corresponding to the premaximum, principal, and diffuse enhanced systems, respectively (McLaughlin 1960). The radial velocities of these absorption systems ranged from -550 to - 1600 km/s for Hα and -300 to - 1180 km/s for the Hβ and Fe II lines. An interstellar band located at 6614 Å is used to derive a color excess of 0.7±0.2, a distance of 1200±250 pc, and an absolute visual magnitude of -6.0 1.0. Significant time variations on the order of minutes were detected in the central portion of the Hα-emission profile on the night of 1 November 1976. The simplest interpretation of these variations requires material with high velocity near the surface of the stellar remnant.
