Abstract

The present study shows how spectroscopic methods are implemented during the identification of diamonds. Specifically, this article presents the characteristic spectroscopic features and criteria of identification for different types of yellow diamonds, including varieties of naturally occurring yellow color and varieties of artificially produced yellow color. Due to the numerous causes of yellow color in diamonds, yellow diamonds are ideal for illustrating the value of spectroscopic methods for identification. The spectroscopic techniques discussed include infrared (IR) spectroscopy, optical absorption spectroscopy, and most importantly laser-induced photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.
