Abstract

Two major terms of the Rittner potential depend on the polarizability of the ions. The model investigated in this paper develops an equation for the Dunham constants, an, which depend on experimental values of ωe and Be for the molecule and the ionic polarizabilities of the constituent ions. The predicted dissociation energies of 20 alkali halides are in excellent agreement with experimental evidence. The model is therefore expected to be a satisfactory predictor of other spectroscopic parameters. The paper cites theoretical values of Y20 and Y11 for the 20 alkali halides which compare favorably with available data.
