Abstract

This is the second paper of our spectroscopic confirmation of 55 CV candidates listed in the Downes et al. catalog of cataclysmic variables. Twenty-seven confirmed CVs have been published in the first paper in this series. In this paper we present low-resolution spectra of the 28 disproved or questionable objects in 3700-8500 A wavelength range. According to our spectroscopic observation, 17 of them show late-type spectra, four reveal hot continua without emission, three are WDs, one is a quasar, one is an H II region galaxy, one is a dMe star, and there is also a detached WD + dM binary. Among the 28 objects, 21 are clearly not CVs. According to the misidentification rate of our program stars, over 100 objects listed in the catalog of Downes et al. without published spectroscopy may be misidentified.
