Abstract

The digital versatile disk recordable (DVD-R) is a disk where enormous amounts of digital data can be recorded. The reflection, absorption aad transmission rates of a laser beam in the layer of DVD-Rat 650 nm with no reflecting layer were numerically calculated. The results indicate that it is preferable to use a dye as the recording media with its complex refractive index (n+ik, where n is the refractive index and k is the extinction coefficient) value in the range of 2.1 + i0.02 to 2.7 + i0.12. Otherwise the possibility of achieving the required reflection and absorption range by controlling the recording layer thickness is very low. Spectroscopic properties of dye films were measured and the optical characteristics were studied. It has been shown that the dyes studied here are good candidates for high-density optical recording.
