Abstract
This article reviews the history of real photo postcards and hand-coloring practices to draw attention to their historical and artistic value, and the significance of their preservation. A real photo postcard of French stage actress, Melle Charclais, dating back to the early 1900s’ and taken by Léopold Reutlinger, a famous German photographer, was selected to acquire knowledge on the materials and techniques used at the time to develop an understanding of their deterioration paths; and accordingly, make correct preservation choices. This particular real photo postcard was chosen for its esthetic value since it represents an unusual art nouveau style of postcard designs integrating photography with hand-coloring and bead art. The photographic process used was identified as silver gelatin process using a USB digital microscope. Analyses performed using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance—Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of Hematite, Cobalt Blue, and Naples Yellow.
