Abstract

AbstractThe formation of iron(III)‐complexes with some phenolic acids viz. 1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoic acid, sulpho‐p‐cresotic acid and acetyl‐p‐cresotic acid has been investigated spectrophotometrically by JOB's method of continuous variation. The composition of violet coloured complex in each system was found to be 1:1. From spectrophotometric data the values of the formation constant for the 1:1 complex ions viz. (Fe‐1‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoate)+ (Fe‐sulfo‐p‐cresotate)+ and (Fe‐acetyl‐p‐cresotate)+ have been calculated which work out to be 1.25 · 102, 1.06 · 102 and 4.64 · 102 respectively.
