Abstract

Attempts of previous investigators (1,2) are preparing enzymatically active clarified extracts of the steroid 21-hydroxylase system have not been successful. We have found that treatment of bovine adrenocortical microsomes with the non-ionic detergents of the Triton series and particularly with Triton N-101 yields enzymatically active, homogeneous extracts suitable for examination with customary optical instruments. It is the purpose of the present communication to present the method of preparation of Triton extracts and to describe their main spectrophotometric characteristics which have formed the basis of our studies (3,4,5,6) of mixed function oxidases and particularly of the clarified mitochondrial 11 β-hydroxylase system dealt with in an accompanying paper (7).
