Abstract

A procedure has been developed for the ultraviolet spectrophotometric determination of palladium II with thiomalic acid. Maximum absorbance of the yellow organo-palladium complex, PdR 2, is at 350 mμ; the optimum pH range is 1.1 to 2.6. The colour reaction is instantaneous and the complex is stable for several days. Temperature variation over the range 15° to 35° has no significant effect. The coloured complex obeys Beer's law and the practical sensitivity of the reaction is 0.05 ppm of palladium. Tolerances to a number of ions have been established and palladium has been determined in a variety of synthetic samples with good precision and accuracy.
