Abstract

A new spectrophotometric method for the estimation of nitrite/nitrogen dioxide is reported. Acidified benzidine is diazotized in the presence of nitrite/nitrogen dioxide fixed in alkaline sodium arsenite to yield a diazo compound, which is coupled with orcinol in alkaline medium to produce a yellow dye that absorbs at 460 nm. The interference of Cu(II), Pb(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), V(V), Cr(VI), sulfite, and sulfide is investigated. The application of the method to air samples is described. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range 0.04–0.48 μg/ml of nitrite.
