Abstract

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of MgII is described. Magnesium(II) forms a coloured complex with emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone) in basic medium and can be determined in the presence of several cations and anions. Beer's law is obeyed down to a concentration of 0.15 µ ml–1 with a molar absorptivity of 2.3 × 103dm3 mol–1 cm–1 at 553 nm. The method was applied to the analysis of various samples containing trace amounts of MgII.
